Abstract:
This article presents a review of the main historical facts that have transformed Portuguese into an international language. There is also a general overview of the present situation of the language in the world and the difficulties it faces to reach an outstanding position among the other international languages. Finally, there is a discussion of the main discursive formulations about the lusophony and the controversies it has aroused.
