Studying Ancient Religion: A Critical Introduction offers a critical approach to the study of ancient religions. This book provides a critical examination of key concepts that are often associated with “religion” in the ancient world. Drawing examples from the Mediterranean and Near East cultures it explore how these concepts have been commonly defined and used in modern scholarship and the ways they have been instrumental in creating a particular view of past cultures.
Although the book is of interest to college and university students, as well as scholars and educators who study the religions of ancient Mediterranean and Near East, its method of approach is of relevance to anyone who is interested in the critical examination of the past in general, from students and scholars across the humanities (e.g., history, classics), to museums, libraries, and institutions with an interest in considering an alternative approach to the display and narrativization of ancient material.
