This chapter serves as an introduction to a small collection of essays dedicated to the study of religious experience in the ancient Mediterranean world. First, the chapter addresses the challenges of a historical study of religious experiences. Second, a model of religious experience is outlined that connects neurological, textual, cognitive, and ritual aspects of religious experience. Finally, the essays in the collection are briefly introduced.
