Book: Interactions of Vowel Quality and Prosody in East Slavic
Chapter: Vowel Reduction in the Context of Palatalized Consonants
Blurb:
The chapter considers reduction patterns in the contexts of adjacent palatalized consonants. The analysis builds on two generalisations about the Slavic phonology concerning the tendency of consonants to agree in backness and height with the following vowel. This chapter demonstrates that the agreement in backness and height is also operative in mirrorimage contexts, where a vowel changes to accommodate in backness and/or height to the following consonant.
